Udupi, Sep 20: Heavy rain has resulted in the evacuation of 2,874 people to safe places. About 1,201 people take shelter at temporary rehabilitation centers.

About 77 villages are affected in Udupi, Karkala, Kapu, and Brahmavar Taluks. The main affected villages are.


Udupi Taluk: Mooda Nidamboor, Alevoor, Korangrapady, Udyavara, Manipura.
Kapu Taluk: Padu, Palimar, Kote, Mattu, Enagudde, Moodabettu.
Karkala Taluk: Erlapady, Marne, Sooda.
Brahmavar Taluk: Uppoor, Havanje, Neelavara, Heroor.

The district administration has opened 31 temporary rehabilitation camps and provided all the facilities needed.

Udupi taluk recorded the highest rainfall of 399 mm followed by Kapu (296 mm), Karkala (293 mm), Hebri (220 mm), Kundapura (88 mm), and Byndoor (41 mm). The average rain in the district is 226 mm.

Taluk Nodal officers have been appointed for an emergency. Village level committees are formed. NDRF team (22 people from Mysuru and 30 from Mangaluru) have arrived at Udupi and are involved in the rescue operation.

MLA Raghupathi Bhat visited the places that were severely affected due to rain and guided the rescue teams.

BJP Mangaluru Vibhag Prabhari Uday Kumar Shetty at the rescue operation at Kidiyoor in Udupi.

Puthige Matha officials stated that as the rain flooded the Matha premises, about 300 cattle were shifted to a safe place.

According to sources, Udupi had recorded similar rains in 1982 when the houses near Kalsanka in Udupi were flooded and resulted in 3 deaths.

Udupi bears brunt of incessant rain

Udupi, Sept 20: Several families in Udupi and Brahmavar Taluks in Udupi district were shifted to safer places after low lying areas were flooded on Saturday night.

IMD has issued a red alert in the Coastal districts for three days since Saturday. For the last few days, Udupi has been experiencing heavy rain. It increased further on Saturday.

With the low lying areas in Udupi and Brahmavar taluk being flooded, the police, fire and safety officials, and home guards started the operation at night and shifted many families to safer places.

As Indrani rivulet was flooded, places near Kalsanka was flooded.

Water entered the parking area of Udupi Sri Krishna Matha and several vehicles were submerged. Many nearby houses houses have been flooded.

About five feet of water was seen above the road at Kalsanka blocking the Udupi-Manipal and Udupi-Ambagilu main road.

The alert officials had started the rescue operation in the night and moved many people using boats.

Officials confirmed that families in Kidiyur, Nittur, Bellampalli, Havanje, Uppur, Heruru, and Puttige were shifted by Sunday morning.

“We have kept temporary rehabilitation centers ready in the district. At present we are shifting the people from their houses to a safer place. People have gone to the houses of their friends and family members. However, if anybody wants shelter, we will provide them. All facilities are ready,” Udupi district Additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu said.

Prabhu is heading the operation and directed the officials at Bellampalli.

Udupi DC G Jagadeesh also visited some of the affected places and directed the officials.
