Modi dedicates Kochi – Mangaluru Natural Gas Pipeline to the nation

Mangaluru, Jan 05, 2021: The Kochi-Mangaluru gas pipeline commissioned today, will feed 700 CNG stations and supply Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to about 21 lakh households in Kerala and Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually dedicated the 450 km Kochi-Mangaluru gas pipeline to the nation today.

“This pipeline has many benefits. It will boost economies of Karnataka and Kerala. It will provide CNG and PNG for the cities, and also fuel Mangaluru Chemical and Fertilizers (MCF) and Mangalore Refinery of Petroleum Limited (MRPL). It will also decrease pollution, and thereby help in boosting tourism,” Modi said.

“The pipeline commissioned today will result in setting up about 700 new CNG stations in various cities of Kerala and Karnataka. It will also provide Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections to about 21 lakh to households,” Modi said.

He said that with MCF getting fuel through the pipeline at a cheaper rate, the products (fertilizers) can be produced at a cheaper rate. This will in turn help the farmers.

While the pipeline laying work provided 12 lakh man-days employment, the completion of the pipeline will help in providing employment and also result in self-employment generation.

Progress of Gas Pipeline, PNG, and CNG in India:
Modi said that while India had about 15,000 km of the natural gas pipeline since the first project in 1987 to 2014, in the last 6 years India has added 16,000 km of a new pipeline.

Similar was the case with CNG stations. While the first station was started in 1992, the country had about 900 stations till 2014. But in the last 6 years, 1,500 new CNG stations have come up in India.

“We aim to have about 10,000 CNG stations in the country,” he added.

In PNG too India has made notable progress.
“While the country had only 25 lakh Piped Gas connection till 2014, now we have more than 72 lakh connections,” he added.
Modi also gave details about the achievement in Ujjwal Yojana.
